The Pomeranian duck or Pommern duck (Anas platyrhynchos domesticus) gets its name from the Pomerania region in northern Europe, along the Baltic Sea coast, which is now split between Germany and Poland. The term "Pomerania" itself is of Slavic origin, meaning "near the sea". it is primarily recognised in two colours: black or a striking, even light blue. Both varieties feature a prominent, heart-shaped white "bib" on their upper breast, and the black plumage has a beautiful green sheen. These ducks are very active and considered tireless snail and slug hunters. The Pomeranian duck is now considered a rare or endangered breed, with only a few dedicated breeders in Germany and Switzerland working to maintain the population.
