The Mindanao hornbill (Penelopides affinis), also known as the Mindanao tarictic hornbill, is found on the Philippine island group of Mindanao, Dinagat, Siargao, and Basilan. Tarictic is onomatopoeic of its distinctive, incessant call, which sounds like ta-rik-tik. This hornbill is small for a hornbill – the male has a mostly black and whitish head and underparts with a black cheek, while the female is entirely black. Both have a dark-tipped, often buff-coloured tail and a short bill with black bands. Its habitat includes the canopy of primary and secondary rainforests, and it lives in groups in pairs or small flocks.
