The Long-billed Starthroat's (Heliomaster longirostris) name comes from its prominent, extra-long bill and its throat patch (gorget). The Latin species name longirostris means long-billed, and Heliomaster, means sun seeker, as it spends time high in the canopy. The star refers to the star-like iridescent throat patch on the male. The Long-billed Starthroat inhabits tropical lowlands from Southern Mexico to Panama, through Amazonia (Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, Guianas), Bolivia, and Trinidad, preferring forest edges, clearings, secondary growth, woodlands, as well as gardens.
