The elusive Himalayan rubythroat (Calliope pectoralis) male has a vibrant red throat patch. The predominantly greyish-brown female lacks the red throat patch. It often moves about in dense vegetation, which makes it so difficult to spot. During the breeding season the male sings through the day from the top of an exposed perch. Found in the Indian subcontinent and Central Asia, it feeds mainly on small insects including beetles and ants.
