The smallest carnivore in Africa, the dwarf mongoose ( Helogale parvula) lives in groups ranging from 8 to 30 individuals called a pack or troop. The alpha male will often be seen atop a termite mound, watching out for predators such as birds of prey and snakes. Dwarf mongooses and hornbills help one another in the wild – they forage for insects together and alert each other of any potential danger. It is the most abundant small carnivore found in Africa, ranging from Angola to Ethiopia and eastern South Africa.
