The greater necklaced laughingthrush (Garrulax pectoralis) – named for its characteristic laughing call and thrush-like shape – is naturally found in Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand and Vietnam. It is also present in Hawaii. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. The Greater Necklaced Laughingthrush was first described in 1836 by English Ornithologist John Gould.
