The Lesser Brazilian teal (Amazonetta brasiliensis brasiliensis), a subspecies of the Brazilian Teal, male is identifiable by its red beak and legs, while the female has a white throat, a white patch above its eye, and a greyish bill. It is typically found in pairs or small groups in freshwater habitats across South America, from Colombia to Argentina. The Greater Brazilian Teal (Amazonetta brasiliensis ipecutiri) is considered slightly larger than the nominate Lesser Brazilian Teal (Amazonetta brasiliensis brasiliensis). The Lesser is found in Brazil, Suriname, Guyana, French Guiana, central Venezuela, eastern Colombia, and northeastern Peru – the Greater Brazilian in Brazil, northern Argentina, eastern Bolivia, Uruguay, and Paraguay.
