The Giant Owl butterfly (Caligo eurilochus) is the largest in the Americas, with wingspans up to 20cm. It is known for its large eye-spots that mimic an owl's eye to deter predators. It is a crepuscular species, meaning it is most active at dusk and dawn when there are fewer predators. This butterfly feeds on fermented fruit and other sugary substances, and its caterpillar stage is also notable, with larvae that can resemble dry leaves when they pupate. The Giant Owl is found in the rainforests and secondary forests of Mexico, Central America, and South America.
