The ruby-crowned kinglet (Corthylio calendula) males have a reddish crown patch, which is usually concealed – the sexes are identical apart from that crown. Breeding time is when the crown is usually raised – the male may crouch, flutter its wings and raise its red crown feathers while singing. One of the smallest songbirds in North America, it is found from northwest Canada and Alaska south to Mexico.
