The Senegal lapwing (Vanellus lugubris), also known as the lesser black-winged lapwing or Senegal plover, is a quiet bird, tending to be motionless in woodland. It prefers burnt grassland with newly sprouted grass especially near water, and will move on if the grass grows too high. The nest is a scrape or depression positioned on burnt ground with newly sprouting grass. It is found in much of sub-Saharan Africa.
