The southern common fiscal (Lanius collaris) is also sometimes named jackie hangman or butcher bird due to its habit of impaling its prey on acacia thorns to store the food for later consumption. A medium-large black-and-white shrike with a long, thin, graduated tail, it has a characteristic white "V" on its back. It is also known as the common fiscal or fiscal shrike. Found through most of Sub-Saharan Africa, it was previously joined with the northern fiscal (Lanius humeralis), and together they were known as the common fiscal.
