The American bison (Bison bison) lives only in North America, while the two main buffalo species reside in Africa and Asia. The African buffalo or Cape buffalo (Syncerus caffer) is not closely related to the slightly larger wild water buffalo (Bubalus arnee) of Asia. The gaur (Bos gaurus) also called the Indian bison, is the largest extant bovine native to the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia.
