Thorold's deer (Cervus albirostris) is named after Dr. W. G. Thorold, who procured the second two specimens from Tibet in 1891. It is also known as the white-lipped deer for the white patches around its muzzle – the latin name, albirostris, comes from the latin albus (white) and rostrum (snout). A threatened species of deer found in grassland, shrubland, and forest at high altitudes across Tibet and parts of adjoining China, it is one of the largest of all the deer species.
