Scheepmaker's crowned pigeon (Goura scheepmakeri) is named for C. Scheepmaker, the dealer who provided the live bird to the German zoologist Otto Finsch in Amsterdam. Finsch described the species in 1876 and honoured the dealer by naming it Goura scheepmakeri. A large, terrestrial pigeon from New Guinea with blue-grey plumage, a distinctive blue lacy crest, and a maroon breast, it is one of the largest pigeon species, second only to the Victoria crowned pigeon. Also known as the Southern Crowned Pigeon, it prefers dense forests and coastal lowlands as well as rivers and swamps within forests.
