The lesser violetear (Colibri cyanotus), also known as the mountain violet-ear, name distinguishes it from the larger Mexican violetear, and the "violetear" part refers to the iridescent violet patch on the sides of its neck. It was previously known as the green violetear but was split into two species, the lesser violetear and the Mexican violetear. The lesser violetear is found in the highlands of Central and South America, from Costa Rica and western Panama, through the Andes mountains from Venezuela to Bolivia, and into northwestern Argentina.
