The black-winged kite (Elanus caeruleus) – also known as the black-shouldered kite – is a predominantly grey or white raptor with black shoulder patches, wing tips and eye stripe and red eyes. The sexes are alike but the female is slightly larger than the male. It is found in open land and semi-deserts in sub-Saharan Africa and tropical Asia, but it has a foothold in Europe in Spain. The slow hunting flight is like a harrier, but it will hover like a Kestrel.
