The little penguin (Eudyptula minor) is the smallest species of penguin in the world, and originates from New Zealand and Australia. Standing only about 25 to 30 cm tall and weighing roughly 1 kg, their slate-blue colour comes from light-scattering nanostructures in the feathers rather than actual blue pigment. They spend their days fishing at sea and return to shore in groups only after dusk to avoid predators. Traditional nests are in underground burrows or rock crevices, but they also happily nest under buildings, boat sheds, and in stormwater pipes.
