The northern bobwhite, Virginia quail or (in its home range) bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) is named for its loud whistled "bob-white" that sweeps upward in pitch; the song is used mostly by unmated males during the breeding season. A ground-dwelling bird native to Canada, the United States, Mexico, and the Caribbean, there are 23 subspecies – many of which are hunted extensively as game birds.
