The Spangled Cotinga (Cotinga cayana) name comes from the "spangled" or speckled, bright turquoise and blue plumage of the male, which features black markings on the wings and back. The genus name Cotinga originates from the extinct Tupi language word catingá, meaning "bright forest (bird)" or "bird of fine feathers". The male has bright turquoise-blue and purple plumage and the female is brownish-grey. The spangled cotinga is found in the lowland tropical forests of the Amazon Basin and nearby areas in South America, including parts of Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Ecuador, Peru, northern Brazil, and Bolivia.
