The Yezo sika deer (Cervus nippon yesoensis) name Yezo – aka Ezo – comes from the Japanese term historically used to refer to the people and the lands to the northeast of the Japanese island of Honshu. Shika (sika) is the Japanese word for deer. The Yezo is one of the many subspecies of the sika deer. Japan has the largest Sika deer population in the world with more than 3 million.
