The "Dikkop" in Spotted Dikkop is an Afrikaans name meaning "thick head," referring to the bird's large, flattened head. The "Spotted" part describes the bird's plumage. The name is a legacy of the bird's time as the Spotted Dikkop before the common name was standardised to Spotted Thick-knee to better reflect the prominent, knobby joints in its legs. It can be found in open Acacia woodlands with limited undergrowth, areas with patches of bare sand or gravel, and even urban settings.
