The red-shouldered hawk (Buteo lineatus) is named for the red "shoulders" that are visible when the bird is perched. Adults have rich orange barring below and bold black-and-white checkerboard patterning on wings. Members of the genus Buteo are known as buzzards in Europe, but hawks in North America. Its breeding range spans eastern North America and along the coast of California and northern Mexico. Red-shouldered hawks have an unusual courtship ritual. They will fly together and occasionally roll over on their backs. They can be seen flying upside down for short distances.
