Say's phoebe (Sayornis saya) commemorates American naturalist Thomas Say thanks to French naturalist Charles Lucien Bonaparte who first decsribed the bird. A medium-sized, grey-brown flycatcher with a salmon-pink belly it has a solid black tail and bill. It leaps from low perches to snatch insects in midair or pounce on them on the ground. Common across western USA, it prefers dry, desolate areas and breeds from Alaska to south western USA.
