The ruby-throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) male has a gorget (throat patch) of iridescent ruby red. Bright emerald or golden-green on the back and crown, with grey-white underparts, adult males have a more forked tail than females with pointed outer feathers that are solid black. Females and juvenile males have a blunt rounded tail that is mostly black with white tips to the outer feathers. It usually winters in Central America, Mexico, and Florida, and migrates to Canada and other parts of Eastern North America for the summer to breed.
