The Princess Parrot (Polytelis alexandrae) was named in 1863 to honour Princess Alexandra of Denmark, who was Queen of the United Kingdom from 1901 to 1910 as the wife of King Edward VII. John Gould, an English ornithologist who published monographs on birds, named the parrot in 1863, shortly after their marriage. Princess Parrots live in Australia's arid interior, favouring sandy deserts with spinifex, acacia, and eucalyptus, often near water for breeding in tree hollows.
