The white-capped albatross (Thalassarche cauta steadi) or White-capped mollymawk, has a bright white crown (or cap) that contrasts sharply with its pale, silver-grey cheeks and darker eye-brows. The largest of the mollymawks (smaller albatrosses) they occur throughout coastal New Zealand, especially from Cook Strait south, and extends across the Tasman Sea to south-east Australian waters. White-capped mollymawks mainly eat fish, squid, krill, salps and offal from fishing vessels taken from the surface.
