The Slavonian grebe (Podiceps auritus) was originally named Sclavonian – from Sclavonia, an old name for northern Prussia. The spelling was randomly changed to the current Slavonian in 1912. In the United States, the sub species Podiceps auritus cornutus is known as the horned grebe, referring to the orange-yellow crest feathers located above and behind the eyes, called "horns". In general, this diver can be recognised by its orange-red and black breeding plumage, its black and white non-breeding plumage, and its characteristic horns. Auritus is Latin for eared or long-eared. The Slavonian grebe is streamlined with feet set far back on the body. It occasionally uses its wings underwater and can dive for prey in marine waters up to 20m deep.
