The common crane (Grus grus), also known as the Eurasian crane, is a long distance migrant predominantly wintering in northern Africa. It is the only crane commonly found in Europe besides the demoiselle crane (Anthropoides virgo) – it is one of only four crane species not currently classified as threatened with extinction or conservation. A large, stately slate-grey bird, it has a loud trumpeting call, given in flight and display.
