Endemic to Cuba, the blue-headed quail-dove (Starnoenas cyanocephala), or blue-headed partridge-dove, is a shy, ground-dwelling dove known for its distinctive blue, black, and white head and a call that sounds like a whispering "whoooo-oop". It has a unique evolutionary history – DNA analysis suggests the blue-headed quail-dove is a "relictual species," or a long-lost lineage, possibly originating in the Caribbean around 50 million years ago. It is found in lowland forests, especially swampy areas. It has a clumsy, noisy flight and is often confused with a partridge, leading to its local name "perdiz".
