The Capuchinbird (Perissocephalus tricolor) name originates from its prominent brown cowl – the hood-like covering around its neck – which resembles the collar of the cloak worn by Capuchin monks. Also known as the Calfbird, it is found in north-eastern South America and is known for its mating call – a loud, low mooing which can be heard from a great distance. Capuchinbirds gather in leks (mating grounds) where the males display to females by puffing out their cowls and emitting loud, low calls, often described as mooing or like a distant chain saw.
