Endemic to Australia, the musk duck (Biziura lobata) gets its name from the strong, pungent musky odor that males exude from a gland on their rump during the breeding season. This distinct scent is used to attract mates. Males are the largest of Australia's ducks, weighing anywhere from 5 to 7 pounds, and feature a large, leathery bulbous lobe hanging under their bill that inflates during breeding. Females are unadorned and significantly smaller. Because their feet and legs are positioned so far back on their bodies, they are extremely awkward and clumsy walkers on dry ground. There are eastern and western populations in Australia.
