The pink cockatoo (Cacatua leadbeateri), also known as Major Mitchell's cockatoo or Leadbeater's cockatoo, has several names with different origins, but its most common former name, Major Mitchell's cockatoo, honours Sir Thomas Mitchell who was a surveyor and explorer of South-East Australia during the 1800s. It has distinctive crest is a mixture of deep red, pink, and yellow, used to attract a mate or warn others. It also has beautiful salmon-pink and white plumage, and a long lifespan, with one captive bird living to be 83 years old. It is native to inland and semi-arid Australia, with their habitat ranging across central and western Australia, including arid and woodland areas, and even extending to some subtropical regions in the east.
