The near threatened Himalayan vulture (Gyps himalayensis) or Himalayan griffon vulture is the largest of the Gyps species, averaging larger in every method of measurement than its relatives, and is perhaps the largest and heaviest bird in the Himalayas. It differs from the similar-coloured Indian vulture (Gyps indicus) by a stouter, more robust bill. It feeds only on carrion. Nesting up high on the edge of cliff faces and ledges in the Himalayan region, and the Tibetan Plateau, these vultures are formidable beasts, capable of living in environments and feasting on meat that would quickly put an end to any common animal.
