The kelp gull (Larus dominicanus), also known as the Dominican gull, is named for its frequent association with marine kelp beds in the Southern Hemisphere. It lives across coasts and islands through the Southern Hemisphere, including South America, southern Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and Antarctica – it is the only gull species that breeds there. The Kelp gull feeds on fish, crustaceans, molluscs, and carrion. It drops hard-shelled molluscs and shellfish on to rocks from a height to crack them open. They can be quite aggressive, known for attacking seals and even whales to extract blubber.
