The North American porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum), also known as the Canadian porcupine, is the second largest rodent in North America, after the North American beaver. It has around 30,000 quills, strong short legs, and hairless soles on its feet that help it climb trees in search of food and to occasionally build nests. It has excellent senses of smell, hearing, and taste. The quills are made of made of keratin, the same substance found in our hair and fingernails, and detach easily when touched.
