The lesser yellownape woodpecker (Picus chlorolophus) has a distinctive bright yellow tufted nape with red markings above the eye and above the nape, and red moustachial stripes. The female has only a red patch above the ear coverts. Found in evergreen forest and moist deciduous forest, dry forest, woodland, bamboo, scrub, plantations, and well-wooded gardens, it is a widespread and common breeder in tropical and sub-tropical Asia, primarily the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. It ranges from India, Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka eastwards to Thailand, Burma, Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam. The Greater Yellownape (Chrysophlegma flavinucha) is much larger with a uniform yellowish throat and olive-green wings. The Lesser Yellownape is similar-sized but has a very different head pattern, green wings, and barred underparts.
