African elephants, the world's largest land animals, are notable for their outsize ears that flap the heat away. The trunk acts as a fifth limb, a sound amplifier, and an important method of touch. There are two subspecies – the larger savannah or bush elephant (Loxodonta africana africana), which roams grassy plains and woodlands, and the smaller forest elephant (Loxodonta africana cyclotis), which lives in the equatorial forests of central and western Africa.
