The sun parakeet (Aratinga solstitialis) – also known as the sun conure – is named for its vibrant, golden-yellow, and fiery orange plumage, which strongly resembles the warm colours of a sunset or the sun. The name solstitialis is derived from the Latin word for "of the summer solstice," directly translating to "sunny". Native to a relatively small, fragmented geographic range in north-eastern South America – Brazil, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana – it inhabits tropical and subtropical dry savannas, semi-deciduous woodlands, and palm groves, where it relies on fruiting trees and hollow Mauritia palms for food and nesting.
