The downy woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens) is named for the soft white feathers of the white stripe on the lower back. These differ from the more hairlike feathers on the Hairy Woodpecker. Native to forested areas, mainly deciduous, of North America including Canada, the adult downy is the smallest of North America's woodpeckers.
