The small tortoiseshell (Aglais urticae) hibernates in its adult form – often in our houses and sheds – instead of migrating like many butterflies. A medium-sized butterfly, it is common in gardens where it feeds on buddleia and other flowers. It is found throughout temperate Europe, Asia Minor, Central Asia, Siberia, China, Nepal, Sikkim Himalayas in India, Mongolia, Korea and Japan, wherever common nettle, which their larvae feed on, is found.
