The greater vasa parrot (Coracopsis vasa) is one of two species of vasa parrot, the other being the lesser vasa parrot C. nigra. The Greater Vasa is native to Madagascar and the Comoro Islands off the east coast of Africa. Greater Vasas are solid dark-grey to black parrots with white beaks to dark grey beaks and light grey under the tail. It is considered an extremely ancient and primitive bird, having reptilian as well as avian traits. They learn to speak easily and can learn new vocabulary with very few repetitions.
