Native to eastern North America, the eastern grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis), also known as the grey squirrel depending on region, is a tree squirrel in the genus Sciurus. The generic name, Sciurus, is derived from two Greek words, skia, meaning shadow, and oura, meaning tail. The grey squirrel is an invasive species in Britain; it has spread across the country and has largely displaced the native red squirrel, Sciurus vulgaris.
