The Marbled White (Melanargia galathea) has white and gray-black or dark brown markings on the upper side of the wings – despite its common name and appearance, this butterfly is one of the "browns", of the subfamily Satyrinae. It prefers limestone and chalk areas, but can be found in other habitats across most of Europe, southern Russia, Asia Minor and Iran.
