The endangered lilacine amazon parrot (Amazona autumnalis lilacina) name originates from the presence of distinctive broad lilac-tipped feathers on its crown – lilacine is derived from lilac, a pale pinkish-purple colour. The lilac crown develops as the bird matures. Also known as the Ecuadorian red-lored amazon, it is native to the Pacific slopes of western Ecuador, from Manabí south to El Oro, with a possible extension into southwestern Colombia. Its habitat consists of both coastal mangrove forests, where it roosts, and dry tropical forests, where it feeds and nests.
