Deppe's squirrel (Sciurus deppei) is named in recognition of Ferdinand Deppe, a German naturalist and explorer who collected the specimen in Mexico – though it was initially identified by the German naturalist and zoologist Wilhelm Peters in 1863. It prefers damp, dense tropical forests, including oak, pine-oak, and cloud forests, from Mexico through Central America to Costa Rica. Its excellent camouflage that makes it hard to spot, despite being active day and night.
