The peacock butterfly (Aglais io) has brownish-red wings, each with a single, large peacock-feather-like eyespot – used to scare predators. If it feels threatened, the peacock butterfly will flash its wings and produce hissing sound by rubbing its wings in front of the predator. Found in Europe and temperate Asia as far east as Japan, it should not be confused or classified with the "American peacocks".
