Swinhoe's striped squirrel (Tamiops swinhoei) is named after English diplomat Robert Swinhoe (1836-1877), the first British consul in Taiwan - then known as Formosa. His work granted him access to lots of areas that had not previously been open to ornithogists. He discovered many bird species, of which 15 were named after him such as Swinhoe's pheasant, plus four mammals – including this squirrel. Found mostly in China and Southeast Asia, it is a sociable animal that tends to live in groups.
