The endangered vinaceous-breasted amazon (Amazona vinacea) is named for the wash of maroon or purplish-red feathers on its breast and belly – Vinaceous is an adjective meaning wine-coloured. Males and females are alike. It inhabits both lowland and highland Atlantic forests, mixed woodlands with the Araucaria angustifolia (paraná pine), and areas of grassland or cerrado. It is found in South America, specifically in parts of south-eastern Brazil, eastern Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina. It is thought there are only around 2,500 remaining.
