The Diderick, or diederik, cuckoo (Chrysococcyx caprius) is named after its call - it is a noisy species, with a persistent and loud deed-deed-deed-deed-er-ick call. The genus name Chrysococcyx is Greek for gold cuckoo - and the specific name caprius is thought to be a misprint for either cuprea (coppery) or capensis (of Cape of Good Hope). A solitary bird, found in open woodland, savanna and riverside bushes, it occurs in Sub-Saharan Africa and the southern Arabian Peninsula.
