The Nile monitor (Varanus niloticus) name reflects its habitat along the Nile River – it is native to sub-Saharan Africa and along the Nile River Valley up into Egypt. An invasive breeding population is also established in Florida, USA. The largest lizard in Africa, an exceptional swimmer, and a highly intelligent predator, they can stay submerged underwater for up to an hour to hide or hunt. But also, powerful claws allow them to scale trees and sprint fast on land, using their tail as a balance counterweight.
